Key Recommendations:

1. Weight loss will bring about the following conditions

Lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides and raise HDL
Lower blood glucose levels with type 2 diabetes

2. Assess the degree of overweight and obesity conditions by using the BMI method: Normal weight = 19 to 24 BMI, Overweight = 25 to 29 BMI and Obesity = 30 BMI and over.

3. Abdominal fat content is assessed by waist measurement: over 35 inches for women and over 40 inches for men. Heart disease and diabetes is the result.

4. Weight loss goals:
Total to be 10% of initial baseline. Continued weight loss to be assessed after the first 6 months
Weight loss to be 1 to 2 lbs per week over the first 6 months
A reduction of 500 to 1000 cal per day will create a loss of 1 to 2 lbs per week

5. Physical activity, included in the weight loss program, to achieve the following:
Supports weight loss for overweight and obese conditions
May decrease abdominal fat
Increases cardiorespiratory fitness
May support maintenance of weight loss
Should be included in the weight loss and maintenance program

6.Physical activity levels
Recommended 30 to 45 minutes per day, initially 3 to 5 days per week
Long term goal to be 30 minutes per day every day of the week
Activity to be of moderate intensity

7. Combine physical activity with lowered calories to maintain weight loss, reduced abdominal fat and better cardiorespiratory conditions.

8. Behavior therapy is also recommended along with the weight maintenance and physical activity programs.
