So often we hear the word – Metabolic Syndrome.  What does it mean and what affect does it have on our health?
It is identified by three of the following risk factors generally associated with obesity:

A large waist line – over 40” for men, 35” for women
High triglycerides – over 150 mg/dL
Low HDL – less than 40 mg/dL for men, 60 for women
High blood pressure – above 130/85 mm Hg
High fasting blood glucose –  over 100 mg/dL

Any three of these conditions will increase the risk of diabetes by 5 times and raise the risk of coronary  heart disease by 2 times for a person considered obese (BMI of greater than 30).

Additional risks associated with obesity are:  cancer, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, gall bladder and fatty liver disease plus pregnancy problems.
